What does it mean?
A business model answers a few simple questions: Who is my customer? What problem do I solve for them? How does my product reach them? Who pays, how much, and when? And what does it cost me to deliver?
Two similar products can have very different business models. An app that takes a commission on every order works differently from one that sells a monthly subscription, even if the service looks the same.
How does it work?
Many founders map their business model on a single page: customer segments, value offered, sales channels, revenue streams, costs, and key partners and resources. They then test each assumption in the market and adjust.
Common models include direct sales, subscriptions, commissions, advertising, and a free version with paid features.
Why does it matter?
A good idea is not enough if nobody pays in a way that covers the costs. A clear business model helps with pricing, choosing sales channels, and explaining the business to investors.
In the Syrian context
As part of its capacity-building pillar, the union runs hands-on sessions on business model design for founders and early-stage teams, focused on building a model that can last.
According to the Entrepreneurship Observatory (October 2026), 76% of ventures sell through social media and only 2% through online marketplaces, which shapes the sales channels and payment methods a business model can rely on. According to the Aram Lab and Riyada+ investment report 2025-2026, investors prefer companies that solve a clear Syrian problem and have a path to customers outside Syria.
Example
A camera equipment rental platform in Damascus starts by charging a daily fee per item. It then adds a monthly subscription for small photo studios that includes a fixed number of rental days, which makes its income more regular.
Common questions
What is the difference between a business model and a business plan?
A business model explains how a business creates value and earns money, often on one page. A business plan is a longer document that adds goals, timelines, financial forecasts and an execution plan.
Can I change my business model after launch?
Yes, and startups often do. If the numbers show your current way of earning money does not cover costs, changing the model can be better than changing the product.
Does a business have to use only one business model?
Many businesses combine more than one, such as an online shop that sells its own products and also takes a commission from other sellers on its platform. What matters is that income covers costs, not that the model is fashionable.
