Cash flow

In Arabic: التدفق النقدي

In short

The movement of money into and out of a business over a period, which decides whether it has enough cash to keep going.

Last reviewed: · Syrian Entrepreneurs Union team

What does it mean?

Cash flow is the difference between the money that actually came into the business and the money that went out, over a month or a quarter for example. If more came in than went out, cash flow is positive; if more went out, it is negative.

It is not the same as profit. A business can be profitable on paper while its customers pay late, leaving it without cash for rent or salaries.

How does it work?

Founders record every amount coming in and going out, and forecast the coming months in a simple spreadsheet. This shows how many months the cash will last if income stops, and when they will need funding or need to cut costs.

Why does it matter?

Many businesses close because they run out of cash, not because the idea failed. Watching cash flow helps you negotiate payment dates, delay spending that can wait, and seek funding before things become urgent. Investors and lenders also usually ask to see a cash flow forecast before they commit.

In the Syrian context

In the live poll at the EntreStations launch evening (41 participants, September 2026), people were asked how many months their money would last if their income stopped today: 39% said less than three months and 29% did not know. The results show trends in the room only and do not represent all founders in Syria.

The programme's Numbers track covers cash flow alongside pricing, customer cost and budgets, and AoSEn refers founders who need one-to-one advice on cash management and budgeting to accountants and finance experts in its network.

Example

A small furniture workshop near Damascus sells a large order to a restaurant, to be paid in two months. The order is profitable, but the workshop must pay for wood and wages now. It negotiates a 40% upfront payment to cover costs until the rest is paid.

Common questions

What is the difference between cash flow and profit?

Profit is revenue minus costs on paper. Cash flow is the money that actually came in and went out. A business can make a profit and still run short of cash if customers pay late.

How do I make a simple cash flow forecast?

For each of the coming months, list the money you expect to receive and the money you will pay out, and work out the balance at the end of each month. Update it when the numbers change.

What should I do if my cash flow is negative?

Collect money from customers faster, delay spending that can wait, and negotiate payment dates with suppliers. If it stays negative, you may need to review your pricing, your business model or your funding.
