Delegation

In Arabic: التفويض

In short

Handing a task or decision to a team member, with the authority to carry it out, while the founder follows up on the result.

Last reviewed: · Syrian Entrepreneurs Union team

What does it mean?

Delegation means passing responsibility for a specific piece of work to someone else, together with the authority and resources they need to do it. The person does not just follow orders; they make decisions within agreed limits.

Delegating is not walking away. The founder is still responsible for the final result, but watches it from a distance instead of doing every step personally.

How does it work?

Good delegation starts by agreeing the result you want and when, and where the limits lie: what the person can decide alone and what comes back to the founder. You then set short check-ins and let the person choose how to do the work.

It helps to start with small, repeated tasks and widen the authority as the team proves itself.

Why does it matter?

When every decision stays with the founder, the founder becomes the bottleneck and the company slows down as it grows. Delegation frees time for the work only the founder can do, such as winning large customers or raising funds, and builds a team that learns and takes ownership.

In the Syrian context

In the live poll at the EntreStations launch evening (41 participants, September 2026), 77% said they have tasks they are trying to hand over to their team that are still stuck with them, and 63% said they approve every new hire themselves. Panel speakers said the cause is not only a lack of trust, but also fear for the company and little experience of moving from working alone to leading a team. The results show trends in the room only and do not represent all founders in Syria.

Delegation sits in the programme's People track, alongside partners, hiring and culture, and the first session of the pilot phase, on Saturday 17 October 2026, is dedicated to it.

Example

The founder of an educational toy shop selling on Instagram used to answer every message herself. She wrote her new assistant a short guide to prices and delivery times, let her confirm any order without checking first, and reviewed orders once a week. That gave her time to agree deals with two shops in Aleppo.

Common questions

What is the difference between delegating and assigning tasks?

Assigning asks someone to do a set task in a set way. Delegating also hands over the decision within clear limits, and the person is judged on the result rather than the steps.

Why do founders find it hard to delegate?

Usually fear of mistakes, a belief that doing it yourself is quicker than explaining it, or little experience of leading a team. Starting small and checking in regularly makes it easier.

What should I do if someone gets a delegated task wrong?

Go through the mistake together and check that the expected result and limits were clear. Taking the task back at the first error teaches the team that every decision will end up with you.
