Seat sponsorship

In Arabic: رعاية المقعد

In short

A sponsor pays the programme fees of a founder who cannot afford them, so cost does not keep them out.

What does it mean?

Seat sponsorship is when an organisation or individual pays for one or more seats in a training programme or event, on behalf of participants who cannot pay. The participant takes part fully like anyone else, and the support goes straight to the person who needs it.

It is not the same as making a programme free for everyone. The programme keeps a price that covers its costs, and sponsorship fills the gap only for those who cannot meet it.

How does it work?

The sponsor decides how many seats to cover and may name a group it wants to support, such as young people, women or new business owners. The organiser selects participants against clear criteria and reports back on how many seats were used and what participants achieved.

Why does it matter?

Seat sponsorship lets a programme keep a small fee that encourages people to turn up, without shutting out those who have no money to spare. It also gives the sponsor a clear, measurable result: a set number of seats for known people.

In the Syrian context

According to AoSEn's Finance page, sponsors cover the fees of founders who cannot pay, and 14 seats in EntreStations have been sponsored so far, some with support from Sanad Youth.

An in-person EntreStations session costs $10, or $5 for Union members and Sanad members, and participants pay only for the sessions they attend.

Example

A young man running a small phone repair business in Jaramana wants to attend the Numbers track sessions but cannot afford them. A supporting organisation sponsors his seat, and he starts recording his weekly costs and sales.

Common questions

How can I sponsor a founder's seat?

Contact the programme organiser and say how many seats you want to cover, and which group you would like to support, if any.

Do other participants know who has a sponsored seat?

That depends on the organiser's policy. Good practice is for sponsored participants to take part like everyone else, with no distinction.

How is seat sponsorship different from programme sponsorship?

Programme sponsorship covers all or part of the programme's cost, such as the venue or catering. Seat sponsorship covers the fees of a specific participant.
