Customer acquisition cost

In Arabic: كلفة اكتساب العميل (CAC)

In short

The average amount a business spends on marketing and sales to win one new paying customer.

Last reviewed: · Syrian Entrepreneurs Union team

What does it mean?

Customer acquisition cost (CAC) answers the question: how much did each new customer cost me? It includes ads, sales commissions, the salaries of the sales and marketing team, free samples, and discounts used to win a first purchase.

How is it calculated?

Add up everything you spent on marketing and sales in a set period, then divide by the number of new customers you won in that period. If you spent $300 in a month and gained 30 new customers, your CAC is $10.

It helps to work it out per channel, such as Instagram ads, referrals or fairs, to see which one is cheapest.

Why does it matter?

If CAC is higher than what a customer pays you over the whole relationship, every new customer is a loss, however fast sales grow. That is why CAC is always read alongside customer retention: a customer who comes back several times makes the cost of winning them easier to justify.

In the Syrian context

In the live poll at the EntreStations launch evening (41 participants, September 2026), people were asked whether they know what a new customer costs them: 32% knew the exact number, 21% roughly, and 46% did not. The results show trends in the room only and do not represent all founders in Syria.

The programme's Numbers track covers customer cost alongside pricing, budgets and cash flow, so the numbers are ready before any funder meeting.

Example

A handmade accessories shop on Instagram spends $200 on ads in a month and gains 25 new customers, so each one costs $8. Its average profit on a first order is $5, so it focuses on bringing customers back for a second order before spending more on ads.

Common questions

How do I calculate customer acquisition cost?

Divide your total marketing and sales spend in a period by the number of new customers you gained in the same period.

What is a good customer acquisition cost?

There is no single number. The rule is that it should be clearly lower than the profit a customer brings over the whole time they buy from you.

Do discounts and free samples count towards CAC?

Yes, if their purpose is to attract new customers. They are part of what you pay to win them.
