What does it mean?
Venture capital is investment made by specialist funds. A fund raises money from large investors, such as institutions and wealthy families, and puts it into startups it believes can grow very quickly.
It is high risk by design. Many of these companies will fail, so the fund relies on a few big successes to cover the losses and make a return.
How does it work?
A fund looks at hundreds of ventures and backs only a handful. In return it takes a stake and often a seat on the board. It usually invests across several rounds and makes its money when the company is sold or listed on a stock exchange, often years later.
How is it different from angel investment?
An angel investor uses personal money at a very early stage, with smaller amounts and simpler terms. A venture capital fund invests other people's money, asks for stronger evidence of growth and more checks, and puts larger sums into later rounds.
In the Syrian context
According to the Aram Lab and Riyada+ investment report 2025-2026, no venture capital fund led any of the 14 startup investment deals the report recorded in Syria between 2025 and September 2026. Most of the money came from angel investors.
AoSEn refers ready projects to investment funds and support organisations in the market through its referral mechanism, and investment funds also support the association's work preparing the founders they invest in.
Example
A Syrian e-learning platform serves 50,000 users and has started selling in three neighbouring countries. A regional venture capital fund invests $500,000 for a stake and takes a board seat to follow the expansion plan.
Common questions
Is venture capital right for every business?
No. Funds look for companies that can grow many times over in a few years. A steady, slow-growing business such as a restaurant or a local shop is usually better served by loans or the founder's own money.
How does a venture capital fund make money?
It sells its stake for more than it paid, either when the company is bought by another firm or when it lists on a stock exchange.
What does VC stand for?
VC is short for venture capital. People also use it for the funds themselves and for the people who work in them.
