Networking

In Arabic: التشبيك

In short

Building professional relationships with founders, investors, experts and potential customers to share knowledge, opportunities and support.

What does it mean?

Networking is deliberately getting to know people a founder can share experience and opportunities with: a possible partner, an investor, a supplier, a mentor, or another founder facing the same problem. It is not about collecting as many business cards as possible. It is about building relationships based on trust and mutual benefit.

How does it work?

It happens at meetups, events and demo days, in online discussion groups, and through direct introductions from someone who knows both sides. Good networking starts with a clear question: whom do I need to know, and why? Then it relies on following up after the first meeting and offering help before asking for it.

Why does it matter?

Where reliable data is scarce, investors and customers lean on people they know and on referrals to decide whom to trust. One good relationship can open a door that a polished pitch deck cannot. Networking with other founders also spreads practical answers, such as which suppliers are reliable or how others handled a licence.

In the Syrian context

According to the Entrepreneurship Observatory (October 2026), 99% of project owners ask for networking, and their open answers repeatedly ask for a directory linking them to service providers and investors.

The Aram Lab and Riyada+ investment report 2025-2026 found that investors reached most deals through WhatsApp groups, referrals and personal networks. AoSEn makes Community and Networking the first pillar of its programmes, and refers founders who need regional networking to the Tripoli Entrepreneurs Club in Lebanon under a signed MoU.

Example

The founder of an organic vegetable delivery service in Damascus goes to a founders' meetup and meets the founder of an e-payment app. A month later his shop accepts her payments, and she introduces him to two restaurants that become his largest customers.

Common questions

How do I start networking if I know nobody?

Start with open events, meetups and founder groups, and introduce yourself and your project in two clear sentences. Then follow up with a short message to the people you spoke to.

What is the difference between networking and marketing?

Marketing targets customers to sell a product. Networking builds wider relationships with partners, experts, investors and peers. It can lead to sales, but that is not its only aim.

Is online networking useful?

Yes, especially for reaching founders abroad and experts in other countries. Meeting in person still builds trust faster, so combining both works best.
