Scaling

In Arabic: التوسع

In short

The stage where a business grows fast in sales, customers or markets, without its costs rising at the same speed.

What does it mean?

Scaling means a business grows once it has shown that it works: more customers, new cities or countries, a bigger team. The key idea is that revenue grows faster than costs.

A restaurant that needs a new kitchen and staff for every branch is growing, but its costs grow with it. An app that serves a thousand extra customers with the same team is scaling, because each new customer costs less to serve.

When is the right time to scale?

Scaling makes sense after product-market fit, once the founder knows the customer acquisition cost and how long customers stay. It usually needs clear systems that do not rely on the founder for every detail, and funding to cover the growth period.

Why does it matter?

Scaling too early is one of the best-known reasons startups struggle: heavy spending on marketing or branches before the product has proved itself. Scaling at the right time turns a small, working business into a real company.

In the Syrian context

According to the Entrepreneurship Observatory (October 2026), 71% of running businesses want visibility and regional expansion, and 66% of people with a project or idea sit at the Improve Your Business stage of the SIYB framework. Most are still working on marketing and sales while looking ahead to growth.

According to the Aram Lab and Riyada+ investment report 2025-2026, investors prefer companies that solve a clear Syrian problem and have a path to customers outside Syria. But one investor in the report names follow-on funding as the biggest challenge: even a company that raises enough for a year or two finds few options for its next round inside Syria.

Example

An edtech platform in Damascus with recorded coding lessons works well with students in the capital. Instead of opening centres in other cities, it opens online sign-up to students in Aleppo and Homs with the same content, and doubles its students without doubling its costs.

Common questions

What is the difference between growth and scaling?

Growth is more sales, which may come with an equal rise in costs. Scaling is growth where revenue rises faster than costs, so each customer becomes more profitable.

When should I start scaling?

Once customers come back and recommend you, and you know your core numbers such as customer acquisition cost and cash flow. Scaling before that multiplies your problems.

Does scaling mean selling outside Syria?

Not necessarily. You can scale into new Syrian cities, new customer groups, or extra products for the customers you already have.
